{craving} fries

When it comes to cravings, fried and salted foods are on the top of my list, and there is nothing better fried and salted a heaping serving of fries. Whether they come in a basket, on a plate, or in a paper cone, a great pile of fries sings to my soul. Ok, they don’t actually sing, they just taste good, but you get the point.

While I was compiling my list of places for fantastic fries in Richmond, I turned to twitter to make sure I wasn’t overlooking any fry havens. I have asked for food related recommendations on twitter in the past and was lucky to get one, maybe two responses. It seems I have hit a hot button with this one. Richmonders are passionate about their fries.

And they should be. There is nothing worse (and I mean that) nothing worse, than getting a plate of crap fries. I can deal with a not so great burger, or a less than stellar glass of Cab, even undercooked chicken, but mess with my fries and feel my wrath.

If you are also craving a dish of salted potato goodness, try one of these places for twitter approved RVA fries.

On the Rox – By far the most recommendations came through for this place. And I am not surprised in the least. Chef Mike hand cuts these babies and double fries them. You can get them tossed with fresh herbs and course sea salt, tossed with truffle oil or fried in duck fat. You read that correctly. Fried in duck fat! Hello! These are no joke. (I, of course, recommend them with a side of chicken salad panini.)

Burger BachThe first time I went to Burger Bach, I didn’t order a burger because I was mesmerized by their fries. I had what they call the Fry Indulgence, fresh cut fries cooked in peanut oil with bleu cheese, bacon and garlic aioli. They were delicious, but also very intense. A must share plate if you want to leave with any kind of dignity. Don’t do it alone.

Carytown Burgers and Fries – I would have almost overlooked this place if not for a shout out on twitter. I do love Carytown Burgers and if you are looking to totally go crazy with fry deliciousness their chili cheese fries will help you get there.

Station 2 – Another place to overload on a gooey fry mess of yum. Station 2’s wet fries are russet potato fries, crisped to perfection, covered with smoked Gouda cheese and housemade gravy. Make sure to ask for double napkins.

Can Can Brasserie – They of course call them frites and serve them in a artistic paper coned display, but that is where the fancy ends and the good taste begins. No extreme toppings or gravy, just salted and a side of ketchup, available at brunch, lunch and dinner.

McDonald’s – I know I am probably going to hell for this, but I will always have a special place in my heart for McDonald’s French fries. Throw things if you must. I stand by it.

Did I miss your favorite fry place? Feel free to share it in the comments. A big thank you to all the great response from my twitter peeps, to Patrick Hannan for providing the fry photos and to you for reading this. Go forth and get fried!

  1. I was having a conversation about fries on Saturday night and how I don't really believe that, when given the option, anyone actually wants a salad instead of fries. They might pick the salad because its healthier and yes it might be enjoyable, but no one actually wants it.

Fries are also the one food I cant resist and needed some argument to justify my cravings.

    1. Totally agree! Anyone who says they prefer a salad to fries is a liar. Here is a way to justify fry cravings...they are vegan!

  2. I'm more of a tot person myself. The number of restaurants in Richmond that carry tots is slowly dwindling. I shed a tear or two when legend revamped their menu a few months back and axed the tots. There's always Sticky Rice though. Nothing beats a cold PBR and a metal pail of fried golden goodness :)

  4. I love some good french fries... I actually just posted this topic on the Richmond Yelp board only a couple days ago. My sister and I each gave up something for my brother's deployment; she gave up french fries, her biggest vice. Since my brother is safe and sound back home, she is able to eat fries again. We went to Capital Ale House for her first fries back, got their delish belgium fries that come with 4 different types of mayo for dipping; dill, horse radish, cayenne, and garlic... nom nom nom. I am partial to the french fries at Lemaire... Used to snack on them late night allllll the time. Here's the responses I heard from Yelp : Burger Bach, Truffle Fries from Balliceaux, cheese fries from carytown burger & fries, Kitchen 64 for sweet potato fries, & New York Deli. Sorry for the long comment, I love me some good fries!

My favorite would probably be ones with cajun seasoning or tossed in truffle oil... seriously THE BEST.
