The newly renovated Hippodrome in Jackson Ward is home to Mansion Five 26 (526 N 2nd St). After reading this restaurant review and seeing pictures online, I put it on my list of places to go on a date night.
We strayed from our regular, eat at the bar, routine and sat in the dining room, a beautiful dining room at that. I was surprised to see their headboard style booths, just like the one at the Magpie. I had thought that feature was so unique. Is that a popular restaurant design feature or do they just have the same designer?
Their cocktail list is made up of your basic popular cocktails named after African American entertainers and Richmond’s own Maggie Walker. I had to go with the Maggie Walker.
For dinner we had apps and salads. The pork sliders for me and fried oysters for Evan. We both agreed that the pork sliders with Mansion barbecue sauce were some of the best sliders we have had. The sauce was spot on, the rolls were perfect. Oh yeah and the pulled pork shoulder was great, too.
The rest of our meal was good, not great, but we didn’t exactly order adventurously. They are doing an upscale Southern inspired with a twist kind of thing that is oh so popular these days. Menu items that would have probably been a better example of the food they are serving would be the devil-ish eggs, or the country ham biscuits. Maybe next time...
This place looks so cool! I was right by it for the RVA Fashion show thing a couple weeks ago, but I didn't get to go inside! It looks awesome!
